Reasons for PANCard Rejections

It is very easy to apply for a new PAN card. You can now fill the form as well as submit the documents online. However, it is very heartbreaking to see your application get rejected. Let us have a look at the reasons for PAN card rejections that will help you avoid similar mistakes in your form.

Reasons for PAN Card Application to Get Rejected

Any discrepancy in the form or documents submitted with the PAN application will lead to PAN card application rejection. 


Some of the common reasons for PAN card rejections include:

  • Incomplete or wrongly filled application form 
  • Corrections or over written in the application form
  • Signature done outside of the box 
  • In complete postal address or wrong pin code.
  • Pin or staple the photograph. (You need to paste the photograph)
  • Discrepancy in the PAN application form in fields such as name, age, gender, date of birth, etc. Any mistakes in the spelling of the name, DOB, gender, etc. can lead to rejection.
  • Providing unclear supporting documents, wrong documents, or the information in the supporting documents may not match the information filled in PAN card.
  • Use of initials in place of name or names that do not match with the supporting documents. For example, you may have a different name or surname on your school certificate and provide a different name on your form may lead to rejection of PAN application.
  • Do not use short form for company names. Write the complete name of your company and firm. Do not write ‘Pvt’, ‘Ltd’ etc. You should write the complete spelling such as Private or Limited.
  • Mention the ISD or STD codes when you provide phone numbers.
  • Provide correct supporting documents as mentioned on the website of NSDL or UTIITSL.
  • Make sure the photograph provided is clear and latest. It should not be unclear or of the wrong dimensions to avoid rejection.

These are some of the reasons for PAN card rejections. Make sure you duly fill the form and submit it with correct supporting documents and photograph to avoid rejections. In case your application is rejected, you can use your acknowledgement number and check on the official website for the reason of rejection. Indian citizens who are inadvertently issued with a duplicate or multiple PAN card due to administrative error or by applying multiple times and receiving a PAN card each time will need to surrender the duplicate or multiple PAN card. If the multiple PAN card(s) or duplicate PAN is not surrendered, it could result in a hefty fine or even jail.

Let us have a look at the process of how to surrender PAN card in this article.

Surrendering PAN Card


There are two ways to surrender PAN card you can do it online or offline.

Option 1 – Offline Method


1.You need to write a letter to the Assessing Office from the Income Tax office in your jurisdiction. Make sure you write your full name as mentioned on the PAN card, DOB or Date of Incorporation, PAN card number that needs to be retained as well as the details of the duplicate PAN card that needs to be surrendered.

2.You can post or hand over the letter to the nearest tax office in your jurisdiction. Make sure you get an acknowledgement receipt. The acknowledgement will serve as a proof that you have applied for surrendering or cancellation of multiple PAN cards.

3.You can also fill up Form 49 for Change or Correction in PAN and submit it to the nearest UTI or NSDL TIN facilitation center.

Option 2 – Online Method


1.You need to visit the Income Tax Department website and click on ‘Surrender Duplicate PAN’

2.Enter all the details of the duplicate PAN number(s) and the PAN number you wish to retain. Fill all the other details required.

3.Submit the form and follow the further procedure as directed.

Surrendering PAN Card Due to Death of Holder


In case of demise of PAN card holder, the relatives need to send a letter to the Income Tax Officer of the jurisdiction. The letter needs to mention the reason for surrender as demise of the holder along with the copy of the deceased’s death certificate. Mention the PAN number, name, and date of birth.

Surrender of Firm/ Partnership/ Company PAN Card


In case a firm/ partnership/ company has dissolved or shut down, then they can surrender the PAN by filling form 49A online. Enter the PAN card number in item No.11 of the form. Submit the form and print the acknowledgement receipt. Send this receipt along with the required documents to the NSDL office.

Similarly, you can surrender the card offline as well. You need to write to the Income Tax Officer under whose jurisdiction the firm/ company taxes were filed. Mention that the company has dissolved or shut down. Attach a copy of the deed that states the company is dissolved, the PAN card as well as the copy of the acknowledgment of the return being filed for the discontinuation period. Submit the letter and documents to the Income Tax Officer. Make sure you keep the copy of the acknowledgement received from the Income Tax office.

This is how to cancel PAN card. You cannot hold more than one PAN card as it is illegal. Make sure you surrender PAN card that are allotted to your by mistake.

What is Form 61?


Form 61 is furnished when a person (not a company or firm) does not have a PAN number. Form 61 serves as a declaration and contains all the details of the person who is entering into the transaction as well as the amount involved.

You can change the address on PAN card by filling a New PAN Card or/and Change in PAN Data form. Let us see the procedure on how to change address on PAN card in this article.

Application for Change of address in PAN


An applicant who already has been allotted a PAN number can apply for any changes in PAN card. If you wish to update your PAN card with new personal details such as address, you need fill the Request for New PAN Card Or/ And Changes Or Correction in PAN Data.

You can fill the form online by visiting https://www.tin-nsdl.com/faqs/pan/faq-pan-reqfornewpan.html. Here, from the menu bar on the left hand side of the screen select Apply Online. Scroll down to Change/ Correction in PAN Data and click on it.

Online Application for Request for New PAN Card Or/ And Changes Or Correction in PAN Data (PAN Change Request Form) will open. (https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/correctiondsc.html)

Now scroll down to the bottom and Select Category of applicant as Individual and click on select.
Form https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan2/servlet/NewPanCorrectDSC will open.



Fill in the details as mentioned in the form and click on Submit.

You may need to submit scanned copies of supporting documents such as Proof of Identity, Proof of Date of Birth, digital signature as well as photograph. Pay the application fees online via Demand Draft, Credit/Debit card, or Net Banking.
