How to Cancel PAN Card Online?

It is now possible to cancel your additional inadvertently allotted PAN card online. Let us see the procedure of how to cancel PAN card online in the following paragraphs.

Cancel/ Surrender PAN Card Online

  • From the Application Type, select Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data/ Reprint of PAN Card (No changes in existing PAN Data)
  • Enter your details in the form below and on submission you will be directed to a new page.
  • Here a token number will be generated and displayed to applicant before filling of the form. This token number will also be sent to the applicant on the email address provided.
  • You will spot ‘Submit scanned images through e-Sign'.
  • Under this mention the PAN number you wish to retain. Enter the personal details and remaining information. Click Next.
  • Fields that have a ‘*’ should be filled compulsorily.
  • Do not check the box on the left margin as it is for the field given for correction or errors in PAN card.
  • On the next page, you need to enter the additional PANs that have been allotted to you by mistake. Click Next.
  • Make sure you have filled all the mandatory fields in the form and enter the PAN to be cancelled in the form. The PAN to be cancelled should not be same as the PAN mentioned at the top of the form.
  • On the next screen, select Proof of Identity, Address and DOB you wish to submit as supporting document.
  • Upload the scanned image of the photograph, signature, and the documents selected.
  • On submission, you will get a preview of the application form that you need to verify, make corrections (if needed) and then proceed to make the payment.
  • Payment can be made either by Demand Draft, credit card, debit card, or via internet banking.
  • In case demand draft is used, it should be in the favor of ‘NSDL-PAN’, payable at Mumbai. Mention the name of the applicant and the acknowledgement number at the reverse side of the demand draft.
  • Once the payment is successful by online payment, you will get an acknowledgement receipt. Save it for future reference. Print it and sent it to NSDL e-Gov.
  • Individual applicant needs to paste two photographs in the space provided in the acknowledgement and cross-sign such that a part of the sign is on the photo as well.
  • In case application is not made by an individual, then the authorized signatory of the (Karta in case of HUF, Director in case of Company, Partner in case of Partnership Firm / LLP, Trustee in case of Trust and Authorized signatory in remaining categories) needs to sign the acknowledgement receipt.
  • On the envelop super scribe ‘Application for PAN Cancellation’ along with the acknowledgement number.
  • Post the duly filled acknowledgement receipt at the following address:
  • NSDL e-Gov at 'Income Tax PAN Services Unit, NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited, 5th Floor, Mantri Sterling, Plot No. 341, Survey No. 997/8, Model Colony, Near Deep Bungalow Chowk, Pune - 411 016.

You need to make sure the signed and filled form reaches NSDL within 15 days of submitting the online form. The income tax officials may probe the details of the surrendered PAN returns. Just filling the online form does not mean the PAN will be cancelled. One may have to visit the Assessing Officer to convince him/her that your additional PAN was allocated by mistake.
