Documents Accepted for PAN Card Application

When applying for a new PAN card, one needs to provide certain supporting documents to process the application. The supporting documents include Proof of Identity, Proof of Address, Proof of DOB, etc.

There are a number of valid supporting documents accepted for PAN card application. We shall cover the list of documents accepted in the following article.

List of Documents Acceptable as Proof for PAN Card Application


The following documents are acceptable as Proof Identity (POI), Proof of Address (POA), and Proof of Date of Birth as per the Rule 114(4) of Income Tax Rules, 1962.

FOR INDIVIDUALS AND HUF


Proof of Identity


Copy of:


  • Aadhaar Card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India
  • Elector’s photo identity card
  • Passport
  • Driving License
  • Central Government Health Scheme Card or Ex-servicemen Contributory Health Scheme Photo Card
  • Central or State Government or Public Sector Undertaking issued Photo Identity card
  • Ration Card having photograph of the applicant
  • Arm’s License
  • Pensioner Card with photograph of applicant

Proof of Identity


Original of:


  • Certificate of identity in Original signed by a Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative Assembly or Municipal Councilor or a Gazetted officer;
  • Bank certificate in Original on letter head from the branch(alongwith name and stamp of the issuing officer) containing duly attested photograph and bank account number of the applicant;

Proof of Address


Copy of:


  • Aadhaar Card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India
  • Elector’s photo identity card
  • Passport
  • Driving License
  • Electricity bill
  • Landline telephone or broadband connection bill
  • Water bill
  • Consumer gas connection or book or piped gas bill
  • Bank account statement
  • Depository account statement
  • Credit card statement
  • Domicile certificate issued by the government
  • Passport of spouse
  • Post office pass book having address of the applicant
  • Latest property tax assessment order
  • Allotment letter of accommodation issued by Central Government or State Government of not more than three years old
  • Property registration document

Proof of Address


Original of:


1.Certificate of identity in Original signed by a Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative Assembly or Municipal Councilor or a Gazetted officer;
2.Employer Certificate in Original

Proof of Date of Birth


Copy of:


  • Aadhaar Card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India
  • Elector's photo identity card
  • Passport
  • Driving License
  • Central Government Health Scheme Card or Ex-servicemen Contributory Health Scheme Photo Card;
  • Central or State Government or Public Sector Undertaking issued Photo Identity card;
  • Birth certificate issued by the municipal authority or any office authorised to issue birth and death certificate by the Registrar of Birth and Deaths or the Indian Consulate as defined in clause (d) of sub-section (1) of section 2 of the Citizenship Act, 1955 (57 of 1955);
  • Pension Payment Order;
  • Marriage Certificate issued by Registrar of Marriage;
  • Matriculation certificate or mark sheet of recognized board;
  • Affidavit sworn before a magistrate stating DOB;
  • Domicile certificate issued by the Government

Things to Note:


1.In case the applicant is a minor then the any of the above mentioned documents of the parents or guardian of such minor need to submitted as proof of identity and address.

2.For HUF, an affidavit by the Kart of Hindu Undivided Family that states the name of the father and address of all the coparceners on the date of application and copy of any of the above mentioned documents which are in the name of the Karta of HUF is required as the proof of identity, address and DOB.

3.POA is required for residence address mentioned in item 7.

4.Indian citizens residing outside India require copy of Bank Account Statement in country of residence or copy of Non-resident External (NRE) bank account statements shall be the proof of address.

FOR CATEGORIES OTHER THAN INDIVIDUALS & HUF


The following documents are accepted as POI and POA for applicants such as firm, BOI, AOP, AOP (Trust), Local Authority, Company, Limited Liability Partnership, Artificial Juridical Person.

Having Office of their Own in India


Type of Applicant


1.Company - Copy of certificate of registration issued by Registrar of Companies.

2. Partnership Firm - Copy of certificate of registration issued by Registrar of firms or Copy of Partnership Deed.

3. Limited Liability Partnership -  Copy of Certificate of Registration issued by the Registrar of LLPs

4. Association of Persons (Trust) -  Copy of trust deed or copy of certificate of registration number issued by Charity Commissioner.

5. Association of Person, Body of Individuals, Local Authority, or Artificial Juridical Person -    Copy of Agreement or copy of certificate of registration number issued by charity commissioner or registrar of cooperative society or any other competent authority or any other document originating from any Central or State Government Department establishing identity and address of such person.

Having No Own Office in India


1.Company/Firms/Limited Liability Partnership/AOP (Trusts)/AOP/ BOI/Local Authority/Artificial Juridical Person:

(1.1) Copy of Certificate of Registration issued in the country where the applicant is located, duly attested by “Apostille” (in respect of the countries which are signatories to the Hague Convention of 1961) or by the Indian Embassy or High Commission or Consulate in the country where the applicant is located or authorised officials of overseas branches of Scheduled Banks registered in India.

(1.2) Copy of registration certificate issued in India or of approval granted to set up office in India by Indian Authorities.

These are the valid supporting documents accepted for PAN applications. You do not need all these documents, but at least one for each category, i.e. POA, POI, and Proof of DOB.
