How to Download e-PAN Card?

  • You need to go to NSDL official website.
  • Select Application type ‘Request for New PAN Card or/and Changes or Correction in PAN data’.
  • Fill the information such as name, date of birth, etc. You need to give your email ID if you need an e-PAN card.
  • You will be given token number that will also be sent to your email ID.
  • Click on continue and you will land on a new page. You will be asked how you wish to proceed with your application.
  • Apply for e-PAN and make sure you select NO to the question ‘whether Physical PAN is required?’.
  • Enter your Aadhaar number, parents name, etc. Aadhaar number is compulsory if you choose e-Sign and e-KYC option.
  • After filling all the relevant data, click ‘Next’. You will be directed to a new page that will ask you to fill your Contact and other details.
  • Once you fill it, you will need to scan and submit documents as proof. You need to upload copy of PAN card and Allotment letter. In case you have lost your PAN card, you must select no documents.
  • In such a case you need to submit a declaration.
  • You will be asked to recheck your application and pay the fees by credit/debit card or net banking.
  • Once the payment is successful, you will be asked to complete the Aadhaar authentication process.

Documents Accepted for PAN Card Application

When applying for a new PAN card, one needs to provide certain supporting documents to process the application. The supporting documents include Proof of Identity, Proof of Address, Proof of DOB, etc.

There are a number of valid supporting documents accepted for PAN card application. We shall cover the list of documents accepted in the following article.

Things to Note:


1.In case the applicant is a minor then the any of the above mentioned documents of the parents or guardian of such minor need to submitted as proof of identity and address.

2.For HUF, an affidavit by the Kart of Hindu Undivided Family that states the name of the father and address of all the coparceners on the date of application and copy of any of the above mentioned documents which are in the name of the Karta of HUF is required as the proof of identity, address and DOB.

3.POA is required for residence address mentioned in item 7.

4.Indian citizens residing outside India require copy of Bank Account Statement in country of residence or copy of Non-resident External (NRE) bank account statements shall be the proof of address.

FOR CATEGORIES OTHER THAN INDIVIDUALS & HUF


The following documents are accepted as POI and POA for applicants such as firm, BOI, AOP, AOP (Trust), Local Authority, Company, Limited Liability Partnership, Artificial Juridical Person.

Having Office of their Own in India


Type of Applicant


1.Company - Copy of certificate of registration issued by Registrar of Companies.

2. Partnership Firm - Copy of certificate of registration issued by Registrar of firms or Copy of Partnership Deed.

3. Limited Liability Partnership -  Copy of Certificate of Registration issued by the Registrar of LLPs

4. Association of Persons (Trust) -  Copy of trust deed or copy of certificate of registration number issued by Charity Commissioner.

5. Association of Person, Body of Individuals, Local Authority, or Artificial Juridical Person -    Copy of Agreement or copy of certificate of registration number issued by charity commissioner or registrar of cooperative society or any other competent authority or any other document originating from any Central or State Government Department establishing identity and address of such person.

Having No Own Office in India


1.Company/Firms/Limited Liability Partnership/AOP (Trusts)/AOP/ BOI/Local Authority/Artificial Juridical Person:

(1.1) Copy of Certificate of Registration issued in the country where the applicant is located, duly attested by “Apostille” (in respect of the countries which are signatories to the Hague Convention of 1961) or by the Indian Embassy or High Commission or Consulate in the country where the applicant is located or authorised officials of overseas branches of Scheduled Banks registered in India.

(1.2) Copy of registration certificate issued in India or of approval granted to set up office in India by Indian Authorities.

These are the valid supporting documents accepted for PAN applications. You do not need all these documents, but at least one for each category, i.e. POA, POI, and Proof of DOB.

How to Cancel PAN Card Online?

It is now possible to cancel your additional inadvertently allotted PAN card online. Let us see the procedure of how to cancel PAN card online in the following paragraphs.

Cancel/ Surrender PAN Card Online

  • From the Application Type, select Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data/ Reprint of PAN Card (No changes in existing PAN Data)
  • Enter your details in the form below and on submission you will be directed to a new page.
  • Here a token number will be generated and displayed to applicant before filling of the form. This token number will also be sent to the applicant on the email address provided.
  • You will spot ‘Submit scanned images through e-Sign'.
  • Under this mention the PAN number you wish to retain. Enter the personal details and remaining information. Click Next.
  • Fields that have a ‘*’ should be filled compulsorily.
  • Do not check the box on the left margin as it is for the field given for correction or errors in PAN card.
  • On the next page, you need to enter the additional PANs that have been allotted to you by mistake. Click Next.
  • Make sure you have filled all the mandatory fields in the form and enter the PAN to be cancelled in the form. The PAN to be cancelled should not be same as the PAN mentioned at the top of the form.
  • On the next screen, select Proof of Identity, Address and DOB you wish to submit as supporting document.
  • Upload the scanned image of the photograph, signature, and the documents selected.
  • On submission, you will get a preview of the application form that you need to verify, make corrections (if needed) and then proceed to make the payment.
  • Payment can be made either by Demand Draft, credit card, debit card, or via internet banking.
  • In case demand draft is used, it should be in the favor of ‘NSDL-PAN’, payable at Mumbai. Mention the name of the applicant and the acknowledgement number at the reverse side of the demand draft.
  • Once the payment is successful by online payment, you will get an acknowledgement receipt. Save it for future reference. Print it and sent it to NSDL e-Gov.
  • Individual applicant needs to paste two photographs in the space provided in the acknowledgement and cross-sign such that a part of the sign is on the photo as well.
  • In case application is not made by an individual, then the authorized signatory of the (Karta in case of HUF, Director in case of Company, Partner in case of Partnership Firm / LLP, Trustee in case of Trust and Authorized signatory in remaining categories) needs to sign the acknowledgement receipt.
  • On the envelop super scribe ‘Application for PAN Cancellation’ along with the acknowledgement number.
  • Post the duly filled acknowledgement receipt at the following address:
  • NSDL e-Gov at 'Income Tax PAN Services Unit, NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited, 5th Floor, Mantri Sterling, Plot No. 341, Survey No. 997/8, Model Colony, Near Deep Bungalow Chowk, Pune - 411 016.

You need to make sure the signed and filled form reaches NSDL within 15 days of submitting the online form. The income tax officials may probe the details of the surrendered PAN returns. Just filling the online form does not mean the PAN will be cancelled. One may have to visit the Assessing Officer to convince him/her that your additional PAN was allocated by mistake.

You need to submit the corresponding PAN card copy(s) along with the cancellation form.

PAN applicants can submit their digital signatures for online form submission. The signature should have a resolution of about 200 DPI, JPEG file type, dimension about 2 x 4.5 cms and in color.

Once you fill in all the details of the PAN card, submit all the supporting documents with your application. Click on Proceed and you will reach the payment gateway. You need to enter your payment details and complete the payment process. Once the transaction is successful you will get a bank reference number and a transaction reference number. Save these details and click Continue. You need to authenticate via Aadhaar. Just tick the box under your Aadhaar number and click on Authenticate.

If all the details match with your personal details on the Aadhaar card, then click on Continue with e-Sign/ e-KYC. Tick on the box and click Generate OTP. You will receive an OTP on your mobile, which you need to enter and click Submit.

You will reach a page that shows your application form as submitted. Download this form in PDF format and save it. You will receive an acknowledgement receipt that needs to be saved too.

  • The photograph and supporting documents such be scanned as per the parameters prescribed. The maximum file size should be 20 KB for photograph should be 20 KB, signature 10 KB and documents about 300 KB per page.

Guidelines for Application of PAN Card


PAN card or Permanent Account Number is an official identification number allotted to individuals, companies, or organization that pays tax. The Income Tax Department issues these unique alphanumeric numbers to keep a track of the financial transactions of tax payers.

If you are planning to apply for a new card, then the following guidelines for application of PAN card will prove to be helpful.

Instructions for Application of PAN Card


Before making application for allotment of PAN or filling the Form 49A, make sure you read the following application.

1. You need to fill the ‘Form 49A’ for allotment of a new PAN card.

2. Fill the application in block (capital/uppercase) letter in English in black ink.

3. Use a recent color photograph of 3.5 cm x 2.5 cm to paste on the form.

4. You need to sign with your correct signature within the box.

5. Those who are giving thumb impression need to get their thumb impression attested by a Magistrate, Notary Public, or a Gazette Officer’s official seal and stamp.

6. Make sure you give the correct AO code in case the applicant is a defense employee:
  • Army – PNE W 55 3
  • Navy – MUM W 11 8
  • Air Force – DEL W 72 2
7. Submit Proof of Identity (POI), Proof of Address (POA), and Proof of Date of Birth (PODOB) as per the Rule 114 (4) of Income Tax Rules, 1962. This is applicable for Individuals or Karta of HUF.

8. Provide POI, POA, and PODB with the exact name you have written in the application.

9. In case of Minor, Idiot, Lunatic, or Deceased, please provide the details of the Representative Assesse in column 14 of the application form.

10. If a Representative Assesse is appointed make sure you provide POI and POA for Representative Assesse.

11. Write your complete postal address in application form along with landmark.

12. Mention the correct pin code in the address field.

13. Mention the telephone number/ e-mail ID in the application form.

Things to Avoid in the Application Form for PAN Card

  • Avoid overwriting or corrections on the application form.
  • Do not staple or pin the photograph. Stick it with glue.
  • Do not sign across the box. Make sure the signature remains inside the box.
  • Do not write anything extra along with the signature such as date, rank, designation, etc.
  • Do not submit the POI, POA, and PODB which are not in the name of the applicant.
  • Do not write the name of the husband in the column meant for father’s name.
  • Do not write any initials in the first and last name field.
  • Do not apply for a new PAN card if you have been already assigned one.

These are some of the guidelines for application of PAN card. Make sure you read and follow them to avoid rejection of application or mistakes in the PAN card.
